The 5-Step Process
Sign up free — no credit card
Go to sheelon.me and create a free account with your email or Google account. Setup takes about 60 seconds. No credit card, no subscription required — the free plan gives you full access to AI generation.
Click "Create Quiz" → "Generate with AI"
From your dashboard, click "Create Quiz." You'll see two options: build manually or generate with AI. Click "Generate with AI" — it's available to all users on the free plan.
Enter your topic and settings
In the AI prompt box, describe what you want. The more specific, the better: "Mitosis and meiosis — grade 10 biology, medium difficulty, 10 questions, include matching and fill-in-the-blank." Then click Generate.
AI generates your quiz in under 30 seconds
Within 20–30 seconds, you have a complete quiz: questions, answer choices, correct answers marked, and distractors calibrated to your difficulty setting. Review each question and make any adjustments — typically 1–2 questions need a small edit.
Customize and launch
Add a cover image, adjust time limits per question, enable team mode if you want, then click "Save." Your quiz is ready to host. Click "Host Game" to get a 6-digit PIN to share with your students.
What the AI prompt looks like
Topic (example)
“The American Civil War — 8th grade US History, medium difficulty, 12 questions. Include 2 true/false, 8 multiple choice, and 2 matching questions. Focus on causes, key battles, and outcomes.”

What Makes a Good AI Quiz Prompt
The quality of your AI quiz depends heavily on how specific your prompt is. A vague input like “biology” produces surface-level questions. A specific prompt produces a quiz that is genuinely useful for your class. Here is a framework:
Topic
"The Water Cycle" — not just "weather"
Include the specific unit or concept, not the subject area.
Grade / difficulty
"5th grade" or "AP level" or "introductory college"
This calibrates vocabulary complexity and question depth.
Number of questions
"10 questions" or "8 questions"
10–15 is optimal for a class period. Under 5 feels trivial. Over 20 is usually too long.
Question type mix (optional)
"8 multiple choice, 2 true/false"
If you leave this out, the AI picks a reasonable mix. Specifying is better for targeted assessments.
Focus areas (optional)
"Focus on the nitrogen cycle and human impact"
Helps when your unit covers a broad topic but your assessment should narrow down.
Editing AI-Generated Questions
AI quiz generation is not perfect, and it should not replace your professional review. Expect to edit 1–3 questions out of 10:
- Ambiguous questions. Occasionally a question has two defensible correct answers. Your subject expertise catches this in seconds — just click the edit icon and reword.
- Too-obvious distractors. If a wrong answer is clearly implausible, it reduces the diagnostic value. Replace with a misconception your students commonly hold.
- Factual edge cases. For rapidly evolving topics (current events, recent science), the AI may cite outdated information. Always review answers in your area of expertise.
A typical editorial review of a 10-question AI quiz takes 3–5 minutes. That is still 85–90% faster than writing from scratch.
Using Your Own Materials (From Document)
The most powerful AI quiz workflow is not open-ended prompts — it is generating questions from your own course content. The “From Document” feature lets you upload a PDF (a textbook chapter, your own lesson notes, a study guide) and generate a quiz grounded in exactly what you taught.
This has two advantages over topic-based generation: the questions are aligned to your specific wording and examples, and students are being tested on the material you actually covered — not a general model of the topic.
To use it: click “Create Quiz” → “From Document” → upload your PDF → describe the quiz parameters → generate. The process is identical to topic-based generation, but the source is your content.
Hosting the Game: 60 Seconds from Quiz to Live
Once your quiz is saved, launching a live game takes under a minute:
- Click Host Game on your quiz.
- Choose game mode: Classic (competitive scoring), Team (groups compete), or Student-Paced (self-directed).
- A 6-digit game PIN appears on screen. Share it verbally or display it on a projector.
- Students go to sheelon.me/join on their phones, enter the PIN, and type a nickname. No accounts or app downloads required.
- When everyone has joined, click Start Game. Questions advance in real time with live leaderboards between rounds.
