Every question is multiple choice with the correct answer marked. Where the books and the films differ, the books win. Spells are given in their usual Latin-sounding form, which most editions keep, while names of people, places and houses can change from one edition to the next, so none of the questions depend on how a name is spelled or what it means.

Hogwarts and the four houses
Round one stays inside the castle: how students get there, what the houses stand for, and two secrets hidden in the school. Nobody gets sorted here. The questions only ask what the books say about the houses and the building itself.
Six Hogwarts questions
In the books, how do most students travel from London to Hogwarts at the start of term?
Which house do Harry, Ron and Hermione belong to?
Which house has a badger as its emblem?
In the first book, what is the three-headed dog guarding beneath the trapdoor?
Which huge creature lives in the Chamber of Secrets, deep below the school?
At Hogwarts, which class teaches students to look into the future?
Spells, potions and magical objects
Spell names travel well: most editions keep the Latin-sounding incantations, with only a few changes. This round mixes the famous ones with a potion and a magical item, and keeps to what the spell does in the books.
Six spells, potions and objects questions
Which spell knocks an opponent's wand out of their hand?
What does the spell Lumos do?
Which spell makes objects float in the air?
Which spell is used to drive away Dementors?
Which potion lets the drinker look exactly like someone else for a while?
Which magical item hides the person under it from sight?
Characters: families, pets and teachers
The people around Harry: his aunt and uncle, the biggest family in the books, a pet that is not what it seems, and the teachers who change every year. The hard ones here are the ones only a re-reader knows.
Six character questions
Before Hogwarts, Harry lives with his aunt and uncle. What is their family name?
What kind of animal is Harry's pet Hedwig?
How many children do Molly and Arthur Weasley have?
Ron's pet rat Scabbers is secretly which wizard?
Who teaches Defence Against the Dark Arts in the third book?
Which Hogwarts teacher can turn into a cat?
Quidditch, Diagon Alley and the wider wizarding world
The sport, the shopping street, the money and the prison. This round has the easiest questions for new fans and a few number questions for people who like exact rules.
Six Quidditch and wizarding world questions
How many players from one team are on the pitch in a Quidditch match?
How many points is a goal with the Quaffle worth?
In Diagon Alley, what do you buy at Ollivanders?
Which magical creatures run the wizard bank Gringotts?
What is the gold coin of wizard money called?
What is the name of the wizard prison guarded by Dementors?
| Round | Best for | Feels like | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hogwarts and the four houses | Ages 7 to 10, new readers | Easy to medium | The trapdoor question needs the first book |
| Spells, potions and magical objects | Mixed groups, family game night | Easy to medium | Similar-sounding spell names trip up younger players |
| Characters | Ages 10 and up, re-readers | Medium to hard | Two questions need the third book |
| Quidditch and the wizarding world | Parties, a warm-up round | Easy to medium | The points question suits fans of exact rules |
- Start with round one. Questions about the train and the houses get everyone answering before the harder rounds.
- Say "in the books". Fans will argue about the films. Tell the room up front that the books are the rulebook.
- Keep the timer generous. Twenty seconds is enough for most questions, and the spell round is fun to slow down.
- Mix a round into a longer game. One round of six fits easily into a birthday party or a class reward half hour.
- Let the explanation do the work. After each question in the live version, a short line explains the answer, so wrong guesses still teach something.
Harry Potter trivia online is full of mistakes copied from one list to the next. These questions skip the usual traps: no question depends on a film-only detail, no question depends on the English spelling or meaning of a name, and every wrong option was checked against the books so that only one answer can be right. The facts used here are fixed by the seven books and do not change.
