What Makes a Good Chemistry Quiz?

Cover the ideas, not just the vocabulary

A strong chemistry quiz mixes quick recall with questions that make students apply a rule. Symbol and formula recall has its place, but the questions that show who actually gets it are the ones where students predict the product of a reaction, pick the limiting reagent, or explain why a periodic trend runs the way it does. A good spread for a unit quiz: a couple of naming questions (ionic versus covalent naming trips students up long after you teach it), one or two mole calculations, a balancing problem, and at least one question that connects the math back to what is physically happening in the flask.

Match the question type to the skill

Multiple choice works well for predicting reaction products and classifying reaction types. Type-answer questions are better for chemical formulas, because recognizing CO2 in a list of options is much easier than producing it from scratch. Slider questions fit anything numeric: ask the class to estimate the pH of household ammonia or the molar mass of glucose and you will see at a glance how far off everyone is. For lab units, attach a photo of real equipment and ask what it is used for. Plenty of students can label a textbook diagram yet freeze when they see the actual glassware.

Write questions that catch the classic misconceptions

Some chemistry misconceptions survive years of instruction, and a quiz is the fastest way to find out who still holds them. Students say breaking bonds releases energy, when breaking bonds costs energy and forming them releases it. They think mass disappears when a gas escapes an open flask, that dissolving is the same thing as melting, and that a stronger acid must be a more concentrated one. Build your wrong answers around these specific errors and the results screen turns into a diagnosis instead of just a score. If your course covers the life-science side too, the biology quiz maker page walks through the same approach for that subject.
